» A Special National Conference with International Participation (Prague, 28.11.2007)
A special national conference with international participation under the title “The Effective Pedagogy of Early Literacy otherwise What Method of Teaching Reading to Choose” took place in Prague on 28th November 2007. It focused on the teaching of reading and writing, and was organised by the ABC Music educational establishment in co-operation with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic.
The Blended Reading technique is an alternative method for teaching children to read effectively. The Conference confirmed that this method is being used in Czech and Slovak schools. Its special feature is that it provides a highly individual approach to the pupils.
In the morning session, a comparison was made of the four main methods widely used at the present time for teaching reading in Czech and Slovak primary schools. The Sfumato (Blended Reading) methodology was shown to be the most effective and as the only methodology that respects each and every learner, regardless of intellect, or socio-economic background etc. In the afternoon session, the participants had an opportunity to see presentations by teachers from both countries who have been applying the Sfumato methodology.
This Conference contributed toward improving the quality of the teaching of reading in primary schools, with emphasis on supporting and developing reading literacy.
